CCP, the new method for analyzing human movement
Scientific research has shown that athletes learn the most, and that their performances improve when the athlete sees his/her movements back within 10-30 seconds, supported by comments from the coach.
DVC has therefor developped a simple video system CoachCockPit without having to use any markers. Olympic gold becomes more and more within reach!
The Coach Cockpit is, together with the Contour Analysis, a Dutch innovative product developed in the 'golden' triangle: Sports , Business & Science. The product is developed in close cooperation with the coach and 'sports' as a starting point .
> Read here more background information
DVC is working closely with InnoSportNL , an innovation network and several labs that compete with the leading institutes in the world.
DVC has developped the Coach Cockpit (CCP) specifically for the Dutch sporting world to make measurements of individual athletes during training or competition to affect their performances positively.
DVC has converted the CCP software from a research establishment of the Free University of Amsterdam into a user-friendly commercial product and the automatic analysis capabilities have been expanded. The CCP is now available as a commercial product in combination with sports -optimized high speed camera systems.
Contour analysis, the core of the CoachCockPit, is a new method for analysing human movement so no markers (pasted markers) are required.
The data, such as path of the mass center of gravity, speed, but also rotational position of the base or corners, is to be used as an input for the motion analysis of the filmed sports performance and are being used to evaluate this sports performance.
CoachCockPit is versatile
CCP in combination with high speed cameras, is currently used on a daily bases in various sports applications. Click on the different kinds of sports below:
Realising the perfect exercise
Sports club Flik Flak in Den Bosch is equipped with the CoachCockpit.
The CCP is developed with the Dutch topsports coaches gymnastics . The coaches were looking for a simple video system that would make it possible, without 'technical stuff', to record an exercise and to look back on the monitor within a couple of seconds, together with the athlete, to discuss and evaluate the relevant information of that movement.
The existing systems were difficult to control and usually disappeared on a shelf.
The top 3 requirements of the coaches for the Coach Cockpit were:
Based on these requirements a video based system is developped that automatically records relevant movements that can be showed at the monitor at any time.
Then, the images are analyzed, 'performance indicators' calculated and presented within 10-30 seconds after the exercise.
These are parameters that say something relevant about the executed movement . They can be typically used in two ways:
The Coach Cockpit is at frist successfully used in 2010 during the World Cup gymnastics in Rotterdam. This was possible because the measurements were automated and didn't interfere with the athlete or competition.
The dates of the World Cup have been used to investigate which parameters describe the quality of a movement in relation to the judges score well . These performance parameters can be used to compare Dutch athletes with the absolute top sports world, and can be used as guidelines for the immediate feedback during training .

Determining the ideal start.
Skating centre Thialf in Heerenveen is equipped with an automatic start analysis for the long track speed skating.
Thé ideal start in skating can be determined by analyzing the relationship between starting position and start time. An automatic start analysis measuring position and time will help. At InnoSportLabThialf a videosystem is attached to CoachCockpit software that controls a camera and automatically records all starts made on the 500-meter starting line in Thialf. The first recordings were made in March 2014 during the matches of the Viking Race, the World Cup finals and the World Cup Allround.
Of the recordings the first analyzes were made. During the analysis, the relationship between starting positions and starting times is being studied . The starting position is determined with various body angles; the time (and speed) at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 m is extracted from the video clips. The time on the 100-meter is derived from the official contest results; during training various MYLAPS measurement loops under the Thialf ice supply time information.
With this automatic start analysis all future starts can be analyzed without the iceskater and their trainers / coaches at Thialf have to think about it during training or competition. By analyzing all starts, is being checked if the ideal starting position exists; per person is also determined which starting position for him or her is best.
The goal is to be hundredths of a second faster at the first meters to have a better finishing time at the end. This is particularly important for the 500-meter track.
Improving theinduvidualstart of top swimmers and more.
It became clear during the 2007 swimming world championships in Melbourne that the Dutch swimmers losta valuable time during the start.This cost them, in some cases, medals. KNZB indicated that from that moment they needed to work with a systematic and scientifically based method to improve the start of Dutch top swimmers .
InnosportLab Tongelreep is equipped with an advanced above and underwater camera system that captures the start, from position on the starting block to the final dive, automatically and after which the images can be analyzed automatically. From inclination standing position of the swimmer, depth of the dive, to amont others, the determination of the ideal dive per swimmer. This leads to a well-founded improvement advice to the swimmer / coach and thus better performance.
Depending on the pool, DVC has developed 3 scenarios to be able to follow and analyse the swimmer at the start and at the turning point and stroke measurements as well.
Wenn your pool is 25 meters, you can place a 6 camera set-up. This set-up consists of 5 under water cameras at the positions: 2,5 m - 5m - 10m - 15m and 1 frontal camera in the track. The 6th camera is positioned above water on a pole with a fixed position, from the side looking at the starting block.
This scenario requires only 1 PC.
Summarizing:
* 5 under water cameras
* 1 above water camera
* 1PC
When your pool is 50 m, you have the poosibility to double your installation compared to the 25m pool scenario.The biggest advantage is that you van use both ends of the pool for symmultaniously analysis. so on 2 sides of the pool.
This scenario is based on 12 cameras. The basis set-up of the 25m pool mentioned above, is copied with a mirrored setup on the opposite side of the pool. This setup is based on 2 PCs. The 8 under water cameras are now positioned at: 2,5 m - 5m - 10m - 15m - 35m - 40m - 45m - 47,5 m over a lenth of the pool and 2 frontal cameras on each end. Besides also 2 above water cameras looking at the starting-block.
Summarizing:
* 10 under water cameras
* 2 above water cameras
* 2 PCs
Scenario 3 is the most advnaced solution and works with 15 cameras. This setup consist of the 12 cameras of scenario 2 PLUS 3 extra cameras at the distances 20m -. 25m en 30m to cover the complete 50 m length m of the pool.
This scenario requires 2 PCs that you can trigger with one single click to record images over the complete length of the 50M pool .
Summarizing:
* 13 under water cameras
* 2 above water cameras
* 2 PCs including 1 click triggering

The intelligent method to support physical education.
At the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HVA ), in collaboration with the VU University Amsterdam ( FBE ), the CCP will be used not only to support the sport, but also to develop learning methods in physical education to be used at the Academy of Physical Education ( ALO)
More about CCP projects.
There is a great demand for our method of motion analysis and monitoring it. Many of these CCP projects are customized. At present we are working with High Performance Sports in New Zealand. Together with them we developed automated analysis modules for sprints, hurdles and other all-around and athletics events.
Soon new applications for equestrian, mountain biking and bowling will be rounded up and launched.
