GigE Vision

Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) is the fastest growing interface for digital cameras in the field of industrial image processing.

The GigE interface for use in industrial image processing is defined by the GigE Vision standard, which was officially approved in mid-2006. One of the biggest advantages of the GigE camera is the fast data transfer rates (100 MB / s) and long maximum cable lengths of up to 100 meters. These factors make Gigabit Ethernet a universally usable digital interface.

Unlike several older interface technologies, GigE does not require frame grabber, which in turn significantly reduces costs. Another advantage of this interface is the ability to easily combine several cameras: Multi-camera applications are easy to set up.

In addition, the GigE interface offers the possibility for a one-cable solution. A GigE camera with PoE (Power over Ethernet) can be powered via the data cable.

You can also contact DVC for GigE cameras

DVC has a suitable camera for any machine vision application. Of course also if you are looking for a GigE camera. We currently offer GigE cameras from the suppliers below. Click below to see which demo cameras we have in stock.

Digital tools to support you

DVC has access to a number of Basler tools that we would like to share. The tools can help you determine which interface, lens or frame rate you need.

1. Interface advisor

If you are not sure what digital camera interface to choose, you can use the Basler Interface Advisor. This tool helps you decide which interface best suits your individual needs: visit the interface advisor

2. Basler frame rate calculator

The Basler Frame Rate Calculator calculates the frame rate or line scan speed for your Basler areascan or linescan camera as soon as a few parameters are specified. For example, if you have the desire to define an area of interest (AOI). The tool determines the maximum framerate or line scan speed that can be achieved:  to the Frame Rate Calculator

Benefits of GigE

  • High data rates up to 100 MB / s
  • Standard interface for almost every PC hardware
  • Simple infrastructure for use with multiple cameras
  • Long cable distances: up to 100 meters
  • Option of one cable solution: power supply to the camera via the data cable (PoE - Power over Ethernet)
  • Use of existing Ethernet infrastructure
  • Easy integration in all image processing applications (libraries)
  • High standardization through Gigabit Ethernet and GigE Vision standards
